Building...

These last few months I have been trying to put together enough money to "Build a Village"; 5 houses, 3 rickshaws in a village in the south of Bangaldesh.

I had planned to begin construction in 3 days, which was beginning to make me nervous, as I only had enough money for 2 houses.

Enter Emma Stroud and an anonymous donor...

Their donations have lifted the fund up to 3 houses and 2 rickshaws...

If you're wondering how the money is distributed:
$50 AUD is equivelant to about 3,000 taka.
That buys about 2,000 bricks.
Each house costs about 56,000 taka to build, and each rickshaw about 16,000 taka.

Ramblings in August...

I’ve been sick for the last couple of days, to the point of being stuck in bed without being able to get up… that’s a lot of time to reflect… 11 months after arriving in Bangladesh, this paradoxical, improbably, impossibly beautiful mess of a country, I still hear the question: “why Bangladesh?”… Except now it always seems to be followed by “why for free?”… I find it to be the least comfortable of questions to answer; my experiences and reasons naturally differ greatly from those of others in my program. Our backgrounds and motivations are difficult to compare, so I often hesitate to respond, lest my answers be taken as a general rule… So why Bangladesh? Because that’s what I was offered. Stay In The Arena...

Tell me if this sounds familiar. My desk is littered with ideas and plans, covered with potential programs and events, business ideas and development plans, strewn with contacts and lists and things to do. There too lies a pile replete with examples of failures, mistakes, moments best learned from rather than repeated.
